Draping: what is it?

13

The beauty dictionary continues to grow with new terms. Draping is a make-up technique that allows you to refine facial features with the help of blush in two shades: lighter and darker. Some craftsmen make draping with just one shade of blush and the play of shades is achieved by carefully blending the product. In fact, draping is not so difficult to master. And yet, it is this technique in makeup that has an excellent lifting effect.

Unlike contouring, draping only targets the cheekbones. This is logical: applying blush to all other parts of the face will not emphasize dignity, but, on the contrary, will make the face tired, or even create the effect of skin with rosacea. This technique has one indisputable advantage: you do not need to use gray-brown shades that create an artificial shadow. On the skin, they often look unnatural (especially if they are poorly shaded). However, the play of chiaroscuro also works in this case. The technique is not too new: in fact, it was widely used in the eighties.

Who is not suitable for draping?

An important caveat: if you suffer from rosacea, then most likely this technique is not for you, since there is already enough red pigment in the skin. Or, to implement such a technique, you will need to use a fairly dense, covering foundation. Also, draping is most likely not suitable for you if the person is tired from overexertion or lack of sleep. In this case, it is worth applying a little blush on the “apples" of the cheeks to add freshness to the face. But bright accents like draping, please, should be avoided.

How to do draping correctly?

The technique for applying blush is extremely simple. With a dark shade, you need to draw a straight line (parallel to the lower border of the lower jaw) under the zygomatic bone. Use a soft, angled brush, lightly touching the skin so that the lines don't come out too harsh. Be sure to shade all lines well. Above the dark line, draw another one – with light blush. Blend the border between the two colors on the apples of the cheeks so that the transition from one to the other is smooth.

Add a radiant touch if you want to add an extra zest to your makeup. For best results, blend a small amount of highlighter just above your light blush. Do this with a fan brush so that the product lays down in a translucent layer. If you go too far, apply a little matting powder on top. In addition to the fan brush, a classic blush brush or a small “torch” is also perfect.

By the way, if you want your makeup to look even more harmonious and interesting, we advise you to also blend the crease of the upper eyelid with the same blush that you have already used in this makeup. And the same shade can be applied to the lips, and then covered with a juicy transparent gloss.

Of course, the draping technique does not need to be done on bare skin. Before applying blush, it is very important to prepare the base: apply foundation, optionally correct imperfections locally, then correct the area around the eyes with a concealer, powder the face with transparent powder. And, after that, you can do facial correction.

What makeup is needed to recreate the draping technique?

Firstly, you will need high-quality blush, it is better if it is a palette of blush in several shades. Thus, with several shades, you can create a more voluminous and interesting make-up. Secondly, you definitely cannot do without high-quality brushes. If you use powder blush, then you will need a beveled natural bristle brush, torch brushes also work well. If you are an adherent of cream blush, then a brush made of high-quality synthetic bristles will come in handy. Keep in mind that you can easily blend cream blush even with your fingers: it will look, in the end, even more natural: after all, the product melts from the heat with your finger and blends much more thinly and evenly.

How to choose the right blush for draping?

As mentioned above, it is best to choose blush palettes – this way you will have more choice and more options for correction. Ideal blush in matte or satin textures. But in general, we advise you to choose blush not so much based on the technique that you plan to use in makeup, but on your own color type. If you have a warm color type, then peach, coral, salmon blush is ideal for you. If it is cold, then pay attention to the products of cold pink flowers, a shade of marsala, burgundy, classic red blush will look great on you. If you have neutral skin, hair, and eye undertones, then a neutral pink shade will look good on you. You can also choose a universal blush on a pink base – but with a golden shimmer.
