How to use a highlighter correctly?
Highlighter today is almost the most popular tool for creating beautiful makeup. A properly selected highlighter allows you to emphasize all the advantages of the face, make its features more elegant, and the skin visually healthier and more beautiful. That is why, in this article, we would like to talk in more detail about how to use a highlighter correctly, as well as how to choose the right functional, but still capricious cosmetic product.
How to use highlighter correctly?
Highlighter is a tool when using which it is worth considering many nuances. Incorrectly selected and incorrectly applied highlighter, unfortunately, can quite significantly spoil the make-up. In fact, in applying a lot depends on the type of highlighter. Let's start with the fact that earlier makeup artists called a highlighter a matte highlighter, which was used to sculpt. That is, with the help of the game of chiaroscuro, facial features were emphasized and corrected. Today, highlighters are on a par with luminizers – special highlighting, shimmery means. They are also applied, as a rule, on the protruding parts of the face, while they give a more pronounced effect than matte highlighters – precisely due to their brilliance.
Where to apply highlighter?
There are several main areas where highlighter can be applied. The choice of one or another zone depends on the goal that you are pursuing. As already mentioned, we are talking about the protruding parts of the face, but there are exceptions. Some even like to apply shimmery highlighter all over the face, under foundation, or by mixing it with tone to create a strobing effect. But the main areas are:
- Eyes. To visually enlarge the eyes and give them radiance, apply the highlighter pointwise to the inner corners (you can directly with your finger), and then blend. It is best, of course, for this purpose to use a small brush made of natural pile. You can also create fashionable smoky eyes with a radiant highlight. To do this, put a point in the middle of the eyelid with a powder or liquid highlighter. If you are doing classic smoky, then the highlighter in the inner corner of the eye is just a must-have.
- Cheekbones. To give your skin a fresher look, apply highlighter to the highest points of your cheekbones. The cheekbones, thus, will become more pronounced, as if sculptural. This will help emphasize facial features. Also, it will create a beautiful glow that will be noticeable when you turn your head, and also help to make the face more prominent. Apply with fingers or brush.
- Some people like to apply highlighter on the forehead area. But it should be borne in mind that this technique is only suitable for dry skin, but in this case it is better to use a not too shiny highlighter so that everything looks beautiful.
- Nose. With the help of a highlighter, you can visually shorten the nose and make it thinner. To make it more elegant, swipe the highlighter from the bridge of your nose to the tip. If your nose does not need correction, just apply a very small amount of the product to the tip of the nose.
- The area around the eyebrows. If you want to visually lift the brow line, apply a highlighter under the brow. Blend. This technique works especially well on the owners of the so-called impending eyelids.
- Lips. With the help of a highlighter, you can easily add extra volume to your lips. Apply the highlighter clearly on the "Cupid's bow".
When using a highlighter, it is important to consider one point. This is a fairly bright accent on the face, almost as bright as red lipstick or black smokes. Therefore, it is desirable to use it with a minimum of cosmetics. For example, in order to diversify your nude makeup.
Highlighter brush: which one do you need?
If you use a powder highlighter, then you will need a small brush made of natural bristles, of any shape that is convenient for you – even a fan, even a “torch". For cream and liquid highlighters, a small synthetic bristle brush works best. But such highlighters can be applied quite well and just with your fingers.
How to choose the right highlighter?
First, the highlighter must match the occasion. For evening outings, you can use bold, fairly shiny products, for daytime – more modest. Secondly, pay attention to the absence of too large sequins. Glitter emphasizes the pores and relief of the skin and does not look too neat. Thirdly, choose the texture that is comfortable for you – powdery or liquid. And be sure to consider the color type. If your skin tone is warm, then take golden highlighters. If cold – then pink or pearl.
