Many people prefer silver over gold, which is due not only to the lower cost of the material, but also the ability to create openwork products from it. However, despite the affordable cost of silver, you can still buy a fake for this precious metal. Find out which silver to buy so you don’t waste your money on a cheap fake.

It is not difficult to distinguish real silver from a fake, you just need to follow some recommendations from experts:

1. Silver jewelry should be bought only in jewelry stores. It is worth refusing to purchase silver jewelry at various exhibitions, in shops and stores. Sometimes jewelers skillfully combine silver with gold, resulting in magnificent jewelry that can only be bought in jewelry stores.
2. It is better to buy 925 sterling silver, because it contains the highest percentage of this precious metal. If you buy items made of silver of a different sample, they darken and oxidize much faster, in addition, they are more difficult to care for.
3. Sometimes, in order to save money, zinc is added to silver, such a mixture is harmful and hazardous to health. Many silver jewelry is sold labeled Zinc free. This is easy to check – it is enough to run silver over the skin, if traces remain, it means that an admixture of zinc is still present. Zinc is not only harmful to health, but also causes increased fragility of jewelry.
4. On each piece of silver jewelry, next to the sample, there must be an assay mark.
5. Before you go shopping for jewelry, find out the rate of silver in the bank. If a jewelry store offers you a large jewelry at a low cost, it is better to refuse such a purchase. A piece of jewelry cannot be worth the price of the material alone, because the jeweler’s work is also included in the price. If the product is decorated with stones, its value becomes higher.

While in a jewelry store, you can use another method to check the authenticity of the material: take the item and quickly rub it against the palm of your other hand. Real high-quality silver always gets very hot when rubbing against the body.

Fake silver is not sold so often in the CIS countries, it is usually sold in the resorts of Turkey and Egypt. While on vacation abroad, refuse to purchase silver jewelry, do it better after arriving home.
