Healthy hair: structure, care, proper washing and nutrition for healthy hair
Dull, weakened, brittle hair, dandruff and split ends indicate that not everything is in order with health, and there has been a failure in the work of some organs. In addition to care for healthy hair, vitamins, a balanced diet, and proper washing using gentle products are necessary.
The structure of the human hair: what does the hair shaft consist of
Skin appendages are the general name for the morphological structures of the skin, which include hair, nails, sebaceous and sweat glands.
Hair is the horny thread-like derivatives of the skin that form the hairline. Each hair is a thin, flexible, but very strong structure, rich in keratin.
Hair covers almost the entire surface of our body, especially on the head (scalp, beard, mustache, eyebrows) and in the groin (pubic hair).
Hair color depends on the amount of pigment contained in them – melanin.
The structure of human hair, as well as their growth, which increases during adolescence, is determined by hormonal, metabolic and hereditary factors.
What does human hair consist of – its visible and subcutaneous part? The visible part of the hair is the hair shaft. The part of the hair that is under the skin is called the hair root (or hair follicle). The bulb is surrounded by a hair follicle – a follicle, on the shape of which the type of hair depends: straight hair grows from a round follicle, slightly curly – from an oval, and curly – from a kidney-shaped one.
The hair follicle is supplied with blood vessels and nerve fibers. It is thanks to the sensitive nerve ending that it hurts us if we pull the hair.
What is the hair shaft made of and what is the function of each layer?
1 Outer layer, or cuticle. The main function of this layer is protective. The cuticle is made up of thin cells like scales that overlap each other like tiles on the roof of a house. If the cuticle scales lie tightly, gently finding each other, the hair will look silky, shiny, soft to the touch. When damage (physically or chemically) to the cuticle cells, the hair becomes brittle and easily tangled.
2 The middle layer – the cortex (cortex) – consists of elongated dead cells that give the hair strength and elasticity. The cortex contains the pigment melanin, which determines the natural color of the hair.
3 The inner layer is the medulla, consisting of soft keratin cells and air cavities. The purpose of this layer is not completely known.
The beauty and health of hair is largely determined by the fatty lubrication formed from the secretions of the sebaceous and sweat glands. This lubricant coats the scalp, protects it from foreign microorganisms and gives the hair a natural shine. The secret of the sebaceous glands, perfectly protecting the hair shaft, smoothes the surface of the cuticle, helping the hair retain moisture and maintain elasticity.
If, for a number of reasons, the sebaceous glands secrete too much secretion, the hair becomes greasy; if not enough, the hair dries out.
The phenomenon of "standing on end" hair, called "goosebumps", is nothing more than an involuntary response of the body to cold or fear. The contraction of the muscle located at the base of the hair causes the appearance of small bumps on the skin. In animals covered with fur or feathers, this mechanism allows them to keep a layer of air close to the surface of the skin, thereby protecting them from the cold. And also due to this innate mechanism, the animal visually increases in size and becomes more dangerous in the eyes of the enemy.
Your hair is your health: food for hair beauty
The beauty and health of your hair is compromised due to an unhealthy lifestyle, unbalanced diet, and poor quality care. In addition, due to the natural change in the structure of the hair, observed after 25 years, the hair gradually becomes thinner, fades, their increased loss may occur, they become dry and less elastic.
Proper nutrition is the key to healthy hair and their beauty. A varied, vitamin-rich diet is necessary for the cells that form hair to function normally. Proper nutrition for healthy hair includes foods rich in protein (chicken and turkey meat, eggs, fish), which will provide the hair with valuable amino acids, which is important for the normal production of the main substance of the hair – keratin.
To nourish the hair roots and saturate them with oxygen, iron is needed, which is present in large quantities in spinach, oatmeal, buckwheat, liver, and lentils.
Another important food for hair health is olive oil, which contains the right amount of vitamin E and antioxidants for hair. Take special nutritional supplements as needed and take proper care of your hair and scalp.
Basic rules for washing hair
- The frequency of hair washing is determined purely individually and depends on the type of hair, special working conditions, products used for washing, etc.
- It is not recommended to wash your hair with too hot or too cold water. The fatter the hair, the cooler the water should be. The optimum water temperature for washing hair is 35-45 °C.
- Use only shampoos for washing your hair (never soap!), Individually selected according to the type of hair (it is better if a specialist does it). The effect of using a particular shampoo can only be assessed after at least a few weeks of constant use. In summer, it is advisable to choose a shampoo containing a sun protection factor.
- After washing your hair with shampoo, be sure to use a conditioner or rinse aid, the use of which facilitates combing, moisturizes, gives hair elasticity, shine and volume, restores damaged hair, and prevents the formation of static electricity when combing.
- Masks and creams designed to restore the structure of the hair, nourish dry, lifeless hair, can be used as a regular procedure, or once every 1-2 weeks, depending on the composition and purpose of the mask.
With frequent use of a hair dryer, it is recommended to use special heat-protective preparations.
Proper hair washing involves the following points:
1 Comb your hair thoroughly before washing.
2 Shampoo is applied to the head twice during one wash.
3 Before applying the shampoo to your hair (especially if it is concentrated), mix it with a little water (you can directly in the palm of your hand).
4 When washing, you should always move from the roots of the hair to their tips, since this direction coincides with the direction of the cuticle scales.
5 Long hair is desirable not to tangle during washing, so as not to damage them later when combing.
6 Do not rub the hair against each other strongly during washing, as well as comb wet or damp hair, so as not to damage the hair shaft and cuticle.
7 When caring for hair, for their beauty and health, shampoo must be changed to another shampoo at least once every six months.
If the hair becomes brittle, lifeless, severely split, falls out intensively, a large amount of dandruff appears, etc., then they need treatment (taking the necessary drugs, using therapeutic ointments, physiotherapy, etc.), which should be prescribed based on the results of the examination and, if necessary, special examinations (for example, spectral analysis of hair, which displays a picture of the mineral metabolism of the body as a whole) can be done by a trichologist.
